Rationale for Genetic Testing in Patients With Breast Cancer

Steven J. Katz, MD, MPH

Steven J. Katz, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and health management and policy at the University of Michigan, discusses the benefits and challenges with genetic testing in patients with breast cancer.

By identifying more genetic mutations in a patient, there is more understanding of the patient’s risk, says Katz. These pathogenic mutations and variances can be helpful in considering risk of cancer for both the patient and their family.

However, the challenge in identifying these gene mutations is finding information that is less certain or ambiguous. This can often be confusing in terms of how to proceed, according to Katz.
