The St. Jude Cloud was created to solve the problem of data sharing in pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases. As many in the field are moving toward whole genome sequencing, the amount and volume of data has increased exponentially, Newman says.
A whole genome sequence from a human is about 100 gigabytes in a BAM file. There are now BAM files from thousands of individuals, and it’s becoming unrealistic for researchers to download this much data onto their computer. Newman explains the St. Jude Cloud will remove the need for the data to be downloaded.
