Alexander Perl, MD, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, discusses the current challenges with CAR T-cell therapy for the treatment of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Perl says the biggest problem is making this therapy safe for patients and able to be performed everywhere. The neurotoxicity can be unpredictable and there is currently no therapy to mitigate these particular complications, especially those associated with cerebral edema, which Perl notes as really dangerous.
