Manmeet Ahluwalia, MD, the chief of Medical Oncology, chief scientific officer & deputy director at Miami Cancer Institute (MCI) of Baptist Health South Florida, discusses the important presentations on women’s cancer presented at the Inaugural Miami Cancer Institute Precision Oncology Symposium in Coral Gables, Florida.
The first set of presentations in women’s cancer focused on gynecologic malignancies. Thomas Herzog, MD, the deputy director, University of Cincinnati Cancer Center; Paul and Carolyn Flory, spoke about targeted therapy for the managing patients with cervical cancer. Soon after, John Diaz, the chief of Gynecologic Oncology, lead physician for Clinical Trials in Gynecologic Oncology at MCI, and chief of the Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, Baptist Health South Florida, discussed precision medicine for ovarian cancer.
Two presentations focused on breast cancers. First, the day-one presentation by Reshma Mahtani, DO, a medical oncologist at MCI and chief of breast medical oncology for Baptist Health Wellness and Medical Complex, highlight the use of CDK4/6 Inhibition to treat patients with estrogen receptor-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer. Mahtani also discussed other targeted therapy options for these patients. On day 2, Tiffany A. Traina, MD, the vice chair of Outpatient Operations, Department of Medicine and section head, Triple Negative Breast Cancer Clinical Research Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center presented. Traina discussed advances in the management of metastatic triple-negative breast cancer treatment landscape.
Ahluwalia says, there is excitement about Mahtani and Diaz exchanging ideas with experts in oncology from other institutions.
