Highlighting Advantages of Radiation in Lung Cancer

Silvia C. Formenti, MD

Silvia C. Formenti, MD, chairman of the department of radiation oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine, discusses the advantages of radiation therapy in patients with lung cancer compared to other modalities.

Radiation therapy is very localized and a great deal is already known about how to use this in patients, says Formenti. Radiation is able to control the tumors as well as spare normal tissue around the tumor.

Radiation is also able to reset the immune system of the host against the tumor, Formenti explains. The tumors are able to escape the immune system by making the host tolerant to their growth, but with radiation, cell death can be used to alert the immune system to reject the tumor again.
