Wui-Jin Koh, MD, has been selected as senior vice president and chief medical officer of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). This is a newly-designed position to oversee the NCCN Oncology Research Program (ORP). Koh will begin his position on October 1, joining Robert W. Carlson, MD, chief executive officer, at NCCN headquarters.

With a specialization in gynecologic and gastrointestinal malignancies, Koh is a board-certified radiation oncologist, as well as a professor. He also serves as medical director for radiation oncology at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

In 1997, Koh was a founding member of the NCCN Guidelines Panel for uterine/cervical cancer. He served as panel co-chair in 2004 and served as a member of the pancreatic cancer panel for 7 years.

“Wui-Jin has an extensive history of strong contributions to NCCN, and to the entire oncology community, patients, and providers,” Carlson said in a statement. “This is someone who has already represented our organization worldwide, most-recently in Kenya, Uganda, and Trinidad. He has devoted his entire career to improving outcomes for people with cancer. That makes him an ideal representative for NCCN’s mission.”

The goal of ORP is to improve the lives of patients with cancer using collaborative research efforts to advance the field. In Koh’s role at ORP, he will oversee the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology program as well as the NCCN’s continuing medical education program. He will represent NCCN at clinical and scientific meetings.

“Studies have repeatedly shown how adhering to NCCN Guidelines leads to better outcomes for people with cancer,” Koh said. “It’s been a privilege to contribute to that life-saving legacy. I look forward to doing even more in this new role to make sure that everyone has access to the best possible cancer care, worldwide.”

Currently, Koh is on the editorial board of the Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (JNCCN). He is also an editorial board member for Cancer, American Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Gynecologic Oncology Research and Practice. He has held a number of leadership positions and honors and was previously named recipient of the NCCN Board of Producer’s Award in 2017.

“Looking beyond the lengthy list of impressive credentials, Wui-Jin is simply a great guy, and a wonderful communicator,” Carlson added. “He interacts well with people one-on-one and in groups. I look forward to him playing an integral role in improving the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of cancer care at NCCN.”
