
AI and the Future of Health Care Interoperability

In an interview with Targeted Oncology™, Marcus Neubauer, MD, of The US Oncology Network, discusses the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to address some of the broader challenges facing health care, including interoperability. Based on his experience with AI-enabled tools at the practice level, he notes that these technologies can already improve workflows and reduce some of the inefficiencies that contribute to administrative burden.
Interoperability remains a challenge across health care, with patient records often housed within separate, closed systems that can make it difficult for physicians to access a complete picture of a patient’s medical history. For oncologists managing complex cases, gaps in health information exchange can add friction to care coordination and take time away from clinical decision-making.
As AI capabilities continue to evolve, these technologies could offer new approaches to connecting and organizing information across disparate health care systems. While AI is not a replacement for broader interoperability infrastructure, its growing role in health care could help address some of the information gaps that physicians encounter in practice and support a more connected health care ecosystem.
