How Remote Therapeutic Monitoring Enhances Supportive Cancer Care

At the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, Debra Patt, MD, PhD, MBA, executive vice president of Texas Oncology and president of Community Oncology Alliance, discusses findings from a real-world analysis evaluating remote therapeutic monitoring with electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) in patients receiving treatment for metastatic solid tumors.

Patt described how remote symptom monitoring represents a paradigm shift in oncology care by moving beyond intermittent clinic visits to continuous patient engagement. Rather than relying solely on assessments made during scheduled appointments, patients can report symptoms from home as they occur or through routine weekly prompts while receiving active treatment. This approach provides care teams with a more complete picture of how patients are tolerating therapy between visits and enables earlier identification of worsening adverse events.

Patt explained that earlier intervention can help clinicians better manage treatment-related toxicities before they escalate, with the goal of keeping patients on effective therapy longer while improving symptom control. She emphasized that proactive symptom management may also reduce avoidable emergency department visits and hospitalizations, supporting both patient outcomes and more efficient care delivery.
