Peters Elected President of ESMO for 2020-2021

Solange Peters, MD, PhD, has been elected the president of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) for the 2020-2021 term.

Solange is the head of the Medical Oncology Service, and chair of Thoracic Oncology at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois in Lausanne, Switzerland. She is also the chief resident in charge of thoracic malignancies in the Department of Oncology.

As president of the European society, Peters’ priorities will be education, fostering independent academic research, and supporting oncologists at all stages of their careers.

“I would like to sincerely thank all those who put their trust in me. As ESMO President, I will dedicate my full energy to the well-being and the future of the Society and its members, as well as continuing to promote quality cancer care for all patients,” Peters said in a statement. “ESMO should continuously strive to learn about the needs of its members in order to adapt its activities to the distinct geographical and professional realities in their regions.”

A long-time participant in ESMO activities, Peters is currently an ESMO executive board member, chair of the Women for Oncology Committee, chair of the Press & Media Affairs Committee, and the ESMO 2018 scientific chair.

She is also a board member of the International Association of Lung Cancer, a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, and a member of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer.

Previously, Peters served as an associate editor ofLung Cancer, and as the deputy editor of theJournal of Thoracic Oncology. She also acts as associate editor forFrontiers in Pharmacology of Anti-Cancer Drugsand as review editor ofFrontiers in Thoracic Oncology.She is also the author of many articles in peer-reviewed publications as well as of book chapters and abstracts.
