Sabine Siesling discusses breast conserving surgery versus mastectomy. Siesling says her and her team found that internationally, the survival rate of breast cancer patients is lower when a mastectomy is performed, as compared to breast conserving surgery.

Sabine Siesling, PhD, senior researcher, Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organisation, professor, University of Twente, discusses breast conserving surgery versus mastectomy. Siesling says breast conserving surgery is normally followed up by radiotherapy, which poses an inconvenience to the patient. This my lead patients to choose a mastectomy, given in the Netherlands there is no follow-up radiotherapy.
