Addressing the Unique Challenges of Rural Cancer Care

Fact checked by: Sabrina Serani

Dr Benjamin George transforms oncology care in rural Nebraska, addressing unique challenges and enhancing access to vital treatments for underserved patients.

Benjamin George, MD, currently serving as the medical director of oncology at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska, and Targeted Oncology's second 2025 Oncology Icon, possesses a keen understanding of the specific socio-economic and logistical hurdles faced by patients in rural America. He observes that regions like southwest Nebraska are often underserved across the entire medical spectrum. This lack of proximity to healthcare providers means that many residents do not have routine access to basic preventative care. Consequently, when a diagnosis is finally made, the illness is often further advanced, and the patients are significantly sicker than those in urban areas who benefit from regular screenings.

Dr George identifies a unique cultural factor that compounds these medical challenges: the legendary midwestern work ethic. Many of his patients are farmers and ranchers whose lives are dictated by the demanding cycles of the land. In this culture, there is a tendency to prioritize the needs of the farm over personal health. Dr George notes that these individuals often feel they simply do not have the time to seek medical attention until a condition becomes impossible to ignore. This combination of limited physical access to specialists and a cultural predisposition toward self-reliance creates a perfect storm that can lead to delayed treatments and poorer outcomes.

To combat these disparities, Dr George has overseen the development of a surprisingly robust oncology infrastructure at Community Hospital. While many rural facilities are forced to outsource specialized treatments, Dr George’s program offers an impressive suite of on-site services. A cornerstone of this program is the hospital’s own linear accelerator, a sophisticated piece of technology that allows for the delivery of precise radiation therapy locally. This is a critical asset, as radiation often requires daily sessions; having this technology in McCook spares patients from the exhausting burden of an eight-hour round-trip commute every single day.

Beyond the technology, Dr George attributes the program's success to a multidisciplinary team of experts, including:

  • Specialized Oncology Nurses: Providing compassionate, high-level chemotherapy administration.
  • Expert Pharmacists: Ensuring the complex management of modern oncology drugs.
  • Integrated Support Staff: Including physical therapists and nutritionists who address the holistic needs of the patient.

By integrating advanced technology with a deep respect for the rural lifestyle, Dr George is ensuring that the hardworking people of the tri-state area no longer have to choose between their livelihoods and their lives.
